Landscapes guides by Sunflower Books

These classic and excellent walking handbooks have always been in a league of their own. They even have rather good maps, maps that should be sufficient for most. Many excellent photographs.

Be sure to check out their online updates.

A newer effort called Walk & Eat are part walking guides, part restaurant guides (!?) and more.

Their Complete series now offers a complete tourist guide for a few select destinations.

A Walking Guide to Aegina by Gerald Ephraim Nektários Thompson

Ten years old now and in need of an update, but still a good booklet with some hand drawn maps of more dubious quality. Lots of information (perhaps too much for a walking guide) about history etc built into the text makes it a bit hard to follow at points. Available in bookshops on the island.

Fairly outdated guide you can get for free at local tourist offices. Theoretically available in several languages, but at my visit only German ones were left...

Travel Guides:

Greece by Lonely Planet is the classic guide to the whole of Greece, with decent maps, excellent advice on where to stay (with alternatives and prices), good advice on where to eat, some ferry information, even some walking information is included. The best general Greece guide I would say. More town maps would be nice, but the ones they have are very good, with hotel and restaurant recommendations clearly marked! [Buy!!!]

It used to be available in lighter island or island group editions, but of these very few are now left.

Cyprus [Buy!!!]

Greece by Rough Guide is a good alternative to Lonely Planet's version, but has even sketchier maps. Their paper quality used to be pulp (Pulp Non-fiction?), and with pages turning brown or yellow over time. However, this has improved a lot in recent years. Contains good advice on where to stay (but price category only) and where to eat, even some walking information is included. Again, more town maps would be nice. [Buy!!!]

It is also available in lighter island or island group editions.

Cadogan Guides

Greece by Cadogan is very good on historical background, good restaurant guide, decent on accommodation, coarse maps. Unlike the other guides, this one actually makes a good read, thanks to all the excellent and detailled background information. A good alternative for those who would like a little bit more than just the "hard facts". [Buy!!!]

It used to be available in lighter island or island group editions, but of these very few are now left.

Greek Island Hopping by Frewin Poffley

The indispensable guide for ferry travellers, "The Island Hopper's Bible", useful also for hotel information, nothing on eating. A new updated edition every year. The town maps (for as much as 60 islands!) are great, if not exactly bug-free. The island maps are schematic, and although they try to include a lot of information (in the form of easily readable symbols, even with bus routes, a good idea in itself), they can unfortunately be very misleading. With a little more attention to detail, these maps would have been very useful, but in their current state they are of dubious value. That aside, they have done a terrific job in compiling this guide, even with the impossible task of producing timetables and itineraries for every ferry in the Aegean (just be aware that this, of course, is based on data from LAST year).
